Academic journal article Chinese America: History and Perspectives. Chinese American communities during the exclusion era have typically been characterized as “bachelor societies,” with most Chinese men either unable to bring wives to the United States because of exclusionary laws or unable to find Chinese American wives because of the low number of Chinese women in the United States. In other regions of the country, such as the Northeast, however, similar miscegenation laws did not exist. Utilizing data from marriage and census records as well as newspaper accounts, this paper demonstrates that during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Chinese American men in Massachusetts did indeed marry interracially, indicating that historical Chinese American communities were more complex and heterogeneous than are commonly portrayed. This study reinforces the need to reflect upon and analyze the Chinese American experience outside the West in order to achieve a more accurate view of Chinese American history. Chinese men first came to the mainland United States in large numbers in the s and s to partake in the gold rush and seek employment. Many men were already married and sought work to support their families. Very few brought their wives or children, and few Chinese women came on their own.
